Earlier this week, preparing to speak to the students at #banffjazz about meditation, embodied listening, and the powerful history of the electric guitar. One of the many great things @vijayiyer has done with this program is separate instrument clinics from artist presentations, and to separate those two things from the practice of actually conceptualizing the music itself. Normally I would have to take this hour to touch on composition structures or fundamentals of the instrument and that would be the sum total of our time together. This gave me a chance to speak more broadly, and somehow that gave me the opportunity to speak with much more depth. I felt my father in the room with us, which happens sometimes when I am doing my job well and with the right intent. It was both humbling and an honor to share this very earnest tradition and approach that we have built for generations down here in the desert. 📸 @jenshyu . . . . . #banff #banffjazz #femaleguitarist #guitarclinic #guitarteacher #guitardad

What a pleasure to share ranks with such amazing faculty this week! When people like this call you to teach among them, you get up and get your ass on the plane.
