the Suite Unraveling

Somewhere between 2003 and 20013, I grew frustrated with what I often call ‘binary’ approaches to improvisation–some guy or a group of guys play a rhythm or set of chords and one other guy solos over the top of it.  What a limiting soundscape!

Over the course of a decade I developed a graphic language based on Walter Thompson’s ‘Soundpainting’ concept–a sign language designed to aid the conductor/composer in attempts at composition through improvisation.

The result was the Suite Unraveling, an instrumental rock band playing graphically-driven math-rock while conducting experiments in group improvisation along the way.

Our work culminated with a release on John Zorn’s Tzadik records in 2014.
